You know, people come to Marbella expecting flashy cars and beach clubs, but a huge portion of them are here for one thing: golf. The Costa del Sol has earned its nickname "Costa del Golf" for good reason. Within a 30-minute drive of Marbella, you'll find more than 20 golf courses. Some of them are among the best in Europe. It's not just a summer resort. Golfers play here all year round.
Why Marbella is a Golfer's Paradise
Marbella isn't just a place with a few golf courses. It's a golfing ecosystem. The weather helps, of course. We get over 320 sunny days a year. Even in January, you'll often play in short sleeves. This means you can plan a golf trip here almost any time.
The variety of courses is another big draw. You have everything from championship layouts that challenge the pros to more forgiving courses suitable for a relaxed round. Many courses are designed by famous names like Robert Trent Jones Senior or Seve Ballesteros. They make good use of the natural Andalusian landscape. You'll find elevated tees, tricky water hazards, and plenty of olive groves and cork oaks to contend with.
Accessibility is key too. Málaga Airport is only about 45 minutes away. You can land, pick up your hire car, and be on the first tee in a couple of hours. This region really caters to golfers. You'll find pro shops, driving ranges, and academies everywhere. Many hotels even specialise in golf packages.
Top Golf Courses in Marbella and Nearby
Marbella's "Golf Valley" in Nueva Andalucía is where many of the best courses are concentrated. You'll find several excellent options within a few minutes of each other.
Los Naranjos Golf Club
Los Naranjos is one of my favourites. It’s a Robert Trent Jones Senior design, opened in 1977. You'll find wide fairways and large, undulating greens. This makes it challenging but fair. It’s a par 72 course, 6,569 metres from the white tees. The course is always in top condition.
The clubhouse here is excellent. It has a great terrace overlooking the 18th green. It's a good spot for a post-round drink or a meal. They often have groups playing here. You'll find it on Urb. Los Naranjos, s/n, 29660 Marbella. Green fees typically range from €100 to €180 depending on the season and time of day. It’s a popular course, so book well in advance.
Aloha Golf Club
Aloha is another Robert Trent Jones Senior course right in the Golf Valley. It's a par 72, 6,293 metres. Aloha is known for its beautiful design and mature trees. It has hosted the Andalucía Open three times. This tells you it’s a serious test of golf.
The course features some tricky doglegs and water hazards. The greens can be fast. You'll need to think your way around here. The views of La Concha mountain are a bonus on many holes. You'll find it at Urb. Aloha, s/n, 29660 Marbella. Expect green fees from €120 to €200. It's a private club but welcomes visitors.
Rio Real Golf & Hotel
Just east of Marbella town, Rio Real is a classic course designed by Javier Arana. It opened in 1965. It follows the Rio Real river down to the sea. You'll find beautiful tree-lined fairways and some holes right by the Med. The 4th hole, a par 4, plays along the beach. It’s quite memorable.
This par 72 course measures 6,039 metres. It's known for its tricky greens and strategic bunkering. It’s not the longest course, but accuracy is important. The hotel on site is a good option if you want to stay right on the course. You'll find it on Urbanización Golf Río Real, s/n, 29603 Marbella. Green fees are usually between €90 and €160.
Santa Clara Golf Marbella
Santa Clara is a relatively newer course. It opened in 2001 and was designed by Enrique Canales Busquets. It's a par 71, 5,922 metres. It’s known for its "Santa Clara Corner" of holes 12, 13, and 14. These are quite challenging.
The course is well-maintained and generally offers good value. It’s a good option if you're looking for a solid round without the higher price tag of some other courses. It's also quite forgiving for higher handicappers. You'll find it at Ctra. N-340, Km 187, 29603 Marbella. Prices typically run from €80 to €140.
Cabopino Golf Marbella
East of Marbella, near Cabopino Marina, you'll find this course. It's a shorter, par 71 course at 5,170 metres. It’s designed by Juan Ligues. Don't let the length fool you. It's quite hilly and offers some very dramatic holes. The 3rd hole, a par 4, has a huge drop from the tee to the fairway. It's one you won't forget.
Cabopino offers some lovely sea views. It's a good choice if you're looking for something a bit different. It’s generally quicker to play here too. You'll find it at Urb. Cabopino, s/n, 29604 Marbella. Green fees are often in the €70 to €120 range.
Finca Cortesín Golf Club (worth the drive)
Okay, this one isn't strictly in Marbella. It's further west, near Casares, about a 30-minute drive. But I have to mention it. Finca Cortesín is a championship course. It hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship three times. It’s a truly exceptional experience.
The course is long, 6,808 metres from the back tees, and meticulously maintained. The service is impeccable. If you're looking for a serious treat, this is it. It’s a much higher price point, often €200-€350 for a green fee. You can combine it with a visit to Estepona. You'll find more details on our /golf/valderrama/ page for other high-end options in the region. Finca Cortesín is at Carretera de Casares, s/n, 29679 Casares.

Green Fees and Booking Your Round
Green fees in Marbella vary a lot. The price depends on the course's prestige, the time of year, and the time of day you play.
Price Ranges
- Budget-friendly (for the Costa del Sol): Expect to pay €60-€90. Courses like Cabopino or Santa Clara can sometimes fall into this range, especially off-peak or with package deals.
- Mid-range: €90-€150. This is where most good quality Marbella courses sit, including Los Naranjos, Rio Real, and Santa Clara on a regular day.
- Premium/Championship: €150-€200+. Aloha can hit this, and Finca Cortesín certainly does.
These prices usually include the green fee for 18 holes. Buggies are often extra. They typically cost €35-€50. You'll almost certainly want one. It gets hot, and many courses are hilly.
How to Book
You have a few options for booking:
- Directly with the Course: This is always a good idea. Check their websites for current rates and availability. You can often call them too.
- Online Booking Platforms: Websites like Golfhacks, Golfbreaks, or Leadingcourses often have good deals. They sometimes offer packages with buggies included or early bird discounts.
- Golf Tour Operators: If you're planning a full golf holiday, a specialist tour operator can arrange everything. This includes flights, accommodation, and multiple tee times. They often get preferential rates.
- Hotel Concierge: If you're staying at a golf-friendly hotel, their concierge can often book tee times for you. They might get better rates too.
My tip: Always book well in advance, especially for popular courses and during peak season (spring and autumn). Prime morning slots fill up quickly.
Getting to the Golf Courses
Marbella's golf courses are spread out. Public transport isn't a viable option for getting to most of them.
Car Hire
This is by far the easiest way to get around. You'll need a car if you plan to play multiple courses or explore beyond your hotel. Pick one up at Málaga Airport when you arrive. All the major rental companies are there. You'll find plenty of parking at all the golf clubs.
Driving here is generally straightforward. Just be aware of speed cameras and roundabouts. A GPS is helpful, but most courses are well signposted.
Taxis
Taxis are available but can get expensive. A ride from central Marbella to a course in Nueva Andalucía might cost €15-€25 each way. If you're playing Finca Cortesín from Marbella, expect to pay €50-€70 each way. This adds up if you play several rounds. Uber and Cabify also operate in the area. They can sometimes be a bit cheaper than traditional taxis.
Shuttle Services
Some golf hotels offer shuttle services to nearby courses. Check with your accommodation if this is an option. It can save you some money if you don't want to hire a car.
Best Time to Play Golf in Marbella
The weather in Marbella makes it a year-round golf destination. However, some seasons are more pleasant than others.
Spring (March-May)
This is a fantastic time. Temperatures are mild, usually 20-25°C. The courses are green and lush after the winter rain. You'll get plenty of sunshine. It's a popular time, so expect courses to be busy. Book early.
Autumn (September-November)
Another excellent period. The intense summer heat has gone. Temperatures are still warm, around 20-28°C. The fairways are firm. It's often less crowded than spring, especially in November. I find October and November particularly good for golf here.
Winter (December-February)
You can absolutely play golf in winter. Days are shorter, but it's often sunny and mild, 15-20°C. You might get some rain, but it usually passes quickly. Courses are generally quieter and green fees can be lower. It's a great escape from the British or Irish winter.
Summer (June-August)
It gets very hot in summer, often 30°C+. If you play, book an early morning tee time. Start at 7:30 am or 8:00 am. Finish before the midday sun gets too intense. Hydration is crucial. Some courses offer reduced green fees in the afternoon during summer to encourage play. Many locals avoid playing in the middle of the day.
Accommodation for Golfers
Marbella has plenty of options for where to stay. Your choice will depend on your budget and what else you want to do.
Nueva Andalucía (Golf Valley)
If golf is your main focus, stay in Nueva Andalucía. You'll be surrounded by courses like Los Naranjos, Aloha, and Las Brisas. There are many rental villas and apartments here. Some hotels also cater specifically to golfers. It's a quieter area than central Marbella or Puerto Banús. It's still close enough for evenings out.
Marbella Town
Staying in Marbella town gives you easy access to the /marbella/old-town/ and its restaurants. You'll be a short drive from several courses. It's a good choice if you want to combine golf with more cultural activities or evenings out. Check out hotels near the Golden Mile for a bit more luxury.
Puerto Banús
For nightlife and a bit more glamour, Puerto Banús is an option. It's close to the Golf Valley. You'll find plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops. It can be noisy though, so consider that if you're looking for peace and quiet after your round.
East Marbella
Areas like Elviria or Cabopino, east of Marbella, also have golf courses nearby. You'll find a mix of hotels and apartment complexes. It's generally a bit more relaxed than central Marbella.
Where to Stay
Where to stay near Marbella
Many hotels offer specific golf packages. These often include green fees at several courses. Always check what's included before you book.
Beyond the Fairways: Other Things to Do
Even dedicated golfers need a break. Marbella offers plenty to keep you busy when you're not on the course.
Beaches
Marbella has some excellent beaches. Head to /marbella/beaches/ like Playa de Nagüeles or Playa Fontanilla for golden sand and beach clubs. If you want something quieter, try the beaches further east towards Cabopino.
Marbella Old Town
Spend an afternoon in Marbella Old Town. It's a maze of narrow, whitewashed streets. You'll find orange trees, small boutiques, and lovely tapas bars. Plaza de los Naranjos is the main square. It's a great place for a drink.
Puerto Banús
Even if you don't stay there, take a stroll around Puerto Banús. See the superyachts and luxury cars. It’s an interesting spectacle. There are plenty of designer shops and waterside restaurants.
Day Trips
If you have a free day, consider a day trip. Ronda is a stunning town built on a gorge. It's about an hour's drive inland. You could also visit Málaga city. Our /day-trips-from-malaga/ page has plenty of ideas.
Food and Drink
Marbella has a fantastic food scene. You'll find everything from traditional Spanish tapas to high-end international cuisine. Don't miss trying some fresh seafood. The chiringuitos, beachside restaurants, serve excellent grilled fish.
Essential Golf Trip Tips
Here are a few things I've learned from years of playing golf here.
Hydration is Key
The sun is strong, even in winter. Drink plenty of water throughout your round. Buggies usually have cool boxes. Fill them up.
Sun Protection
Sun cream, a hat, and sunglasses are non-negotiable. Even on cloudy days, you can burn quickly.
Dress Code
Most courses have a dress code. Collared shirts are standard. Tailored shorts or trousers are fine. No denim or football shirts. Check the course website if you're unsure.
Pace of Play
Keep up with the group in front. If you're consistently falling behind, let faster groups play through. Spanish golfers appreciate good etiquette.
Golf Shoes
Spiked or spikeless golf shoes are fine. Just make sure they are comfortable. You'll be doing a lot of walking if you don't take a buggy.
Club Hire
You can hire clubs at most courses. This saves you the hassle and cost of bringing your own. Expect to pay €30-€50 per set. The quality is usually good.
Language
Most pro shop staff speak English, especially at the more established courses. A few basic Spanish phrases like "Hola" (hello) and "Gracias" (thank you) always go down well.
Golf Lessons and Practice Facilities
If you want to brush up your game, Marbella is a great place for lessons. Many courses have their own academies.
Driving Ranges
Most courses have a driving range where you can hit practice balls. Some are excellent, like the one at Los Naranjos. You'll find dedicated practice areas for chipping and putting too.
Golf Academies
Several courses offer individual or group lessons with PGA professionals. You can often book a series of lessons over a few days. This is a good way to get some intensive coaching. Aloha Golf Academy is well-regarded, for example.
Fitting Centres
Some centres offer custom club fitting. If you're serious about your game, this can be a worthwhile investment. It ensures your clubs are perfectly suited to your swing.
