The Costa del Sol is one of Spain's busiest summer destinations, and AGP fills up quickly. For June, July, and August travel, book at least three months ahead: ideally four to six if you want any choice of departure time. Shoulder season (April, May, September, October) is more forgiving: six to eight weeks out is usually enough, and fares drop noticeably once you move away from school holiday dates.

Midweek departures on Tuesdays and Wednesdays consistently undercut weekend prices by 15 to 25 percent. If your dates are flexible, use Skyscanner's whole-month calendar view to spot the cheapest days at a glance. Searching one or two days either side of your target date can also shave a surprising amount off the total.

The cheapest months overall are November through March. Winter here is mild (15 to 18°C), quiet, and genuinely pleasant if you want to actually explore rather than sit on a beach. It's when I get most of my sightseeing done: the hill villages above Mijas are deserted, car parks at the main resorts are free, and restaurants have their locals-only prices back.

Budget carriers are competitive on headline fares but aggressive on extras. A checked bag with Ryanair or easyJet can add £30 to £50 each way: if you're travelling as a family, that cost can dwarf the fare difference versus a full-service airline. Pack light or factor it in before you click buy.

Once you land, skip the taxi queue. The Cercanias C1 train runs every 20 minutes directly from the airport terminal to Malaga city centre in about 12 minutes and costs around £1.60. It continues west to Torremolinos and Fuengirola on the same ticket. A taxi covering the same distance to the city costs £20 to £25. Most first-time visitors don't know the train exists: it's the single best money-saving tip I give anyone coming through AGP.
