As it becomes more socially acceptable and affordable to go under the knife it is no wonder that we are beginning to consider going abroad for treatment and Spain is fast gaining a reputation as a leading medical tourist and healthcare destination.

Medical Tourism Growth in Southern Spain

Combined with the fact that it’s easy to get to and there are an abundance of low cost flights as well as savings of up to 43%  that can be made when compared with the same procedure in the UK.

The tourism industry and private health sector have joined forces to attract foreigners combine an overseas holiday with a cosmetic procedure.

Spain, and especially on the Costa del Sol, where in many towns like Marbella and Puerto Banus polished looks have never been more important .

Well known celebrities and famous faces like the glamorous cast from TOWIE show up at the beach and pool parties every summer season flaunting their curves and looking their best.

Cosmetic surgery is huge on the Costa del Sol where there are highly skilled surgeons at the top of their profession available to carry out the procedure.

How does it work?

Select clinics and hospitals in the region have a dedicated department solely dealing with medical tourists and will deal with every aspect of your trip in a similar way as if you were using a travel agent to book your holiday.

Below is a summary of what a reputable company will offer:

  • Flights & airport transfers
  • Accommodation
  • Private hospital room
  • Operation
  • Interpreters where necessary
  • After care
  • Trips & tours if required

It has never been easier and all this can still be loads cheaper than the cost of just the standard operation in the UK.  However remember to factor in extras like the cost of eating out and also travel insurance.

How do I find a reputable company and surgeon?

The best place to start your search in finding the best company to take care of your needs is the internet, specifically look into the credentials of the clinic and surgeon and consider the following:

  • In the case of cosmetic surgery, your chosen surgeon should be a member of the SECPRE (Spanish Society of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive surgery).
  • Find our how many years the surgeon has been practicing, they should have at least 5 years experience in a range of surgical procedures.
  • Look into success rates and also any accusations of malpractice.
  • Ask for references and past patients testimonials.
  • Ensure your health insurance covers you for complications during or after the surgery.
  • Look for a surgeon who speaks your language.
  • Ask about follow up treatments or appointments.

Why choose the Costa del Sol

Healthcare in Spain is excellent; in fact

the World Health Organisation voted Spain’s healthcare system seventh best in the world.

Healthcare Rankings

The World Health Organization, (WHO) published its rankings of 190 of the world’s healthcare systems. France ranked top of the table and all European and Worldwide placements can be seen in the table below.

There are several other “impartial” reports and tables published online but nearly all are skewed in favour of the supporting countries that have financially aided these reports as you can imagine a better placing in this table is not only prestigious but financially lucrative.

Doctors and surgeons studying in Spain are some of the best available, the training is rigorous and as part of their education, they undergo part of their training in other European countries keeping up to date with international developments.

As many surgeons choose to carry out some of their training in the UK, many are also registered with the General Medical Council which means they are recognised as being sufficiently qualified to also work and practice in the UK.

There are many excellent and highly recommended private hospitals with multi-lingual staff offering great savings on cosmetic surgery and dentistry.

You are guaranteed the most up to date modern medical facilities and a private room in one of the coasts best private hospitals, excellent after care and private nursing support from the comfort of your nearby hotel afterwards.

Imagine re-cooperating from your sun lounger whilst relaxing by the pool;  The clinic will see to it that you have a holiday as well as a cosmetic procedure and you go home feeling rested, relaxed and with a new lease of life.

Fat Transfer

In fact with some procedures, you don’t even need to stay overnight in hospital.  There are a number of private clinics in southern Spain which have surgeons pioneering the Fat Transfer technique using water jet stream liposuction.  The medical term is ‘Autologous Fat transfer’; Autologous means the use of one’s own tissue for the transfer.

Fat Transfer is a great alternative to implants in patients wanting larger breasts; it is more natural and less invasive as the technique involves the liposuction of fat from other unwanted parts of the body then transferring it to the breasts, buttocks, hands or face.

This is almost like 2 procedures in one, one or more areas of the body are slimmed and another enhanced.  Usually unwanted fat is taken from the abdomen or thighs in most cases and with just a few days recovery needed and no need for an overnight stay in hospital, you really can get on with your holiday the very next day.

Hi Jacqueline, thanks for your message. Fat transfer is increasingly popular here in Spain, to give you an idea of cost I would need to know more about the type of fat transfer you would like. Have you had any quotes already from any Spanish clinics? If you could provide a little more info I can help further.

        Thanks
        Anna

I appreciate you talking about how the surgeon you choose to perform your cosmetic services should have at least 5 years of experience. Since my sister has had her baby, she’s been dying to lose the rest of her fat and has finally decided to go through a procedure to get rid of it. So I’ll be sure to tell her that she should make sure that the cosmetic surgeon she finds to perform this fat service has had 5 years of experience with her same type of procedure.

Hi Ashley, really important to find a surgeon with lot of experience in the type of procedure you want as some specialize in different things. I wish you and your sister good luck in finding the right person.
