Room Mate Valeria Malaga – Unpretentious Luxury
Room Mate Valeria is arguably one of the most popular places to stay in Malaga. If a boutique style, urban hotel with a fab rooftop bar is your thing; then Valeria should be on your shortlist.
Location
is pretty unbeatable for a city centre hotel, overlooking the beautiful port and at the same time, right on the edge of the old town. This means tons of bars, restaurants and city centre attractions, all within a few minutes walk away.
This upscale hotel is about a 5 minute walk in any direction to all of Malaga’s hot spots, as well as Malaga Centro train station, making getting to the hotel easy if you are arriving by plane.
The train takes just 12 minutes from the airport station to Malaga-Centro Alameda station and they operate every 30 minutes. No need to pre-book, just buy a ticket from one of the ticket machines when you arrive at the airport station, they have an English language option available too.
The attractive new Marina development, otherwise known as Muelle Uno attracts many cruise ships with passengers seeking southern Spain’s year round warm climate.
There’s a huge choice of places to eat, drink and shop around the Marina and it’s really pretty after dark when twinkling lights light up over the bay.
The Marina, Malaga Cathedral and the Moorish Alcazaba Fortress are all just 300 metres from the the hotel. The sandy beach of Malaga can be reached in around 20 minutes on foot.
The main shopping area and one of the most famous street’s in Malaga, ‘Calle Marques de Larios’ is just 200 metres away where you will find many high street and designer boutiques. Rest your legs from all that shopping and grab a table at one of the outdoor terrace cafes and watch the world go by over nice glass of traditional Malaga wine and a tapas.
Style of Hotel
From the outside, the hotel building has been tastefully restored with a cool urban grey facade. It fits in nicely with the other typically 18th century ‘Malaga’ style buildings around it.
Inside the calming tropical blue and green theme of the lobby and reception area is instantly welcoming. It’s design was inspired by the gardens just outside the hotel and the large green leaf print covers the walls and cushions adorning sofas and comfy lounge chairs throughout the hotel.
Rooms and Suites
Accommodation ranges from basic rooms, family rooms sleeping a maximum of 4 and also deluxe suites boasting a separate living room and a generous 42sqm of space. Rooms are spread over 4 floors and some have balconies.
Room decor is quite bold with either blue or green striped wall paper, perhaps not to everyone’s taste, but it works. The bed in our standard room was super comfy with lovely plush pillows and excellent quality bed linen.
All rooms have en suite bathrooms with a super high pressure shower and are equipped with good quality toiletries, in fact some of the nicest we’ve sampled in a hotel.
Bonus points to Room mate for the conditioner, very few hotels provide it so I was one very happy girl, ladies you know what I mean!
Eats and Drinks
One of the biggest draws of the Valeria is the attractive rooftop bar and pool area. Malaga is becoming quite synonymous for it’s selection of rooftop terrace bars and who doesn’t love a gin & tonic watching the sun setting!
While the Valeria’s terrace is not huge it is very well laid out, the pool is fairly small so not ideal if you want to swim, but perfect for a cooling dip.
Comfy lounge beds are a nice addition and there are also plenty of tables and chairs for sitting with a drink. Some with high stools for taking in those amazing views.
The background music on the rooftop is nice and ambient and the Mojitos are to die for, expertly made and absolutely delicious. You could argue that drinks prices are perhaps slightly higher than other bars around but as the setting is so beautiful it’s worth splurging a bit here. Did I mention the Mojitos….
Breakfast Buffet
There’s nothing I like more than a good hotel breakfast and the Valeria’s offering did not let me down. A great selection of juices, cereals, breads, pastries and cold cuts and of course eggs, bacon and good quality ‘bangers’ too.
All was extremely well cooked and more importantly, fresh!
Valeria have done a great job of making the breakfast room appealing with clever use of lighting and attractive furnishings.
Extra Amenities
The Valeria has a small gym available for guests which is open 24 hours a day.
To appeal to business travelers the hotel has an events manager available to guests or visitors wishing to book one of the meeting rooms or to help organise and plan an event.
In addition there is Wifi throughout the hotel, a mini bar in each room and luggage storage, useful if you have a late flight.
There is no parking facility within the hotel, however there are many public car parks nearby.
Family Friendly
The Hotel has a few family rooms, sleeping a maximum of 4 people however most rooms are for a standard 2. We did see a couple of kids during our stay, although I’d say this hotel is better suited to adults.
Families with younger children would perhaps be more suited to a resort style hotel with dedicated children’s facilities.
Value for Money
with an additional charge for breakfast.
The hotel is unpretentiously luxurious and service is flawless throughout. Luxury bed linens and bathroom amenities, lovely rooftop bar for evening drinks and the location and proximity to everything are all what makes the Room-mate Valeria stand out among the crowd.
It’s excellent for money when you factor all of that in, even in high season.
