World Tourism Day is a Hit for Malaga

The city centre of Malaga is home to at least 20 different museums and monuments. On September 27th every year to celebrate World Tourism Day free entry is offered into each and every one.
Now don’t go thinking you can get round all of them or even half in one day, there are over in the city and with at least an hours wait to get into the majority on WTD you would do well to see 2 or 3.

It was also 27 degrees in Malaga on WTD and you really wouldn’t want to be standing in that heat for 10 minutes let alone an hour. Although it was lovely to see people who wouldn’t usually go to a museum enjoying the wonderful art the city has to offer.

My parents were visiting from England so we decided to avoid the queues and had a stroll along the lovely Puerto de Malaga. We sat watching the world go by from one of the pavement cafes with a late morning coffee and an ice-cream for my daughter.
Disappointed to see that La Noria (The big wheel) on the port was not working on Sunday and hadn’t been for a couple of days prior to this too. Especially as there were a couple of big cruise ships in so there was a great buzz about the place and it would have been a great tourist attraction.
Leaving the port we walked into the old town and had a delicious tapas lunch at la Plaza Restaurant in Plaza de la Merced. This area is especially nice on Sundays as there is a little craft market on in the square opposite the row of cafes and restaurants.
Having left Plaza de la Merced we headed in the direction of Malaga Cathedral as my parents wanted to take a closer look, we stopped outside the Picasso museum on the way as we were surprised to see there was no queue.

We were informed it wasn’t free until 5pm, so decided to pay the €7 entry fee and take a look inside at the interesting and distinctive artwork Picasso is famous for. Even my 3 year old was intrigued by some of the pieces on display.
Sadly we never made it into the other places on our hit list for the day, the Cathedral, Calle Larios or the , but that’s for another day!
